The moment I saw the cover of Lorna Peel's novel, A SCARLET WOMAN, I knew I had to read it. Ms. Peel is a new-to-me author and she didn't disappoint with this fabulous tale set in Ireland. She nicely blended her characters and Irish history together to create a captivating love story. I really enjoyed this introduction to the Fitzgeralds of Dublin series; what a beautiful surprise! I simply could not put it down and I will surely watch for her next novel.
Set in Dublin, Ireland in 1880, A SCARLET WOMAN tells the heart warming and touching story of Dr. Will Fitzgerald and Isobel Stevens, two beautiful souls trying to escape a difficult journey of ups and downs. Will left his father's medical practice to offer his help in the Liberties, a poverty-stricken area of Dublin. Isobel is a sweet young woman abused by the men in the past and who had to work in a brothel if she wanted to survive. Then one day, Will, the doctor, and Isobel, a scarlet woman, meet and their lives will forever change for the best. Upon Will's advice, Isobel finds work as a parlor maid where she is happier, but still very much afraid of getting hurt again. Still, they correspond by letters and their new friendship evolves to a loving and caring relationship. However, a series of dramatic events will occur and disrupt their lives. Can their fragile love survive? Is it strong enough to give them a second chance? Will and Isobel are so beautiful together that I could not help myself from loving them and wishing them all the happiness in the world. Yes, I'm a romantic!
I'm so glad to have discovered this author! I love her style of writing, and her words flow off the pages and ignite the imagination. A SCARLET WOMAN is a real page turner, and I have no doubt that lovers of Irish tales will adore this story!
I’ll begin this review by saying, “Someone contact the movie makers. I want to see this story on the big screen.” As with her other book, Lorna is not trying to write a story to fit a certain mold or certain expectations, yet what she has created is a plausible realistic drama (is that an oxymoron?) within its own right.
Her main characters, Will and Isobel, are one of those couples where, most often, it’s them against society. Both of these characters are wounded in their own ways, and I pulled for them both equally. Their evolution as a couple is a wonderful thing to witness. There’s a humorous sequence of events involving them. I don’t know if the humor was intended, but it’s there, nonetheless.
Perhaps, the story’s greatest strength is you know things other characters don’t, and thus the tension is considerably heightened because with every page swiped, you can’t help but wonder when hidden things are going to be revealed and how those revelations will impact Will and Isobel’s struggle for happiness.
The quest for love, secrets threatening to be exposed and a touch of mystery and suspense all combine to create a truly engaging historical romance. This was a very exciting read for me, a unique rule-breaker at a time when I wanted such an escape. Every chance for a genuinely unique story is a chance I enjoy investigating. What a thrill it is when that investigation leads me to a keeper already slated to be reread, as is the case with A Scarlet Woman. If you need to escape the formulas for a while and to meet a couple destined to become one of your favorites, if you enjoy books where the couple spends a lot of time together and all unexpected twists and turns center around one or both of them or their relationship, don’t miss out on A Scarlet Woman. It would be great to have available an audio-recording of this entertaining Irish romance.
Having read Lorna Peel’s Into the Unknown, when I saw the announcement about A Scarlet Woman, I contacted her for an ARC to read, and review, at my option. My thanks to her for sending me a copy. Wanting my own final edition of the book, I’m purchasing a copy.
A very intriguing story. I love the historical aspect of the plot. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance or historical novel.
This is NOT historical fiction. This book takes twists and turns but not in a very believable way, also she has her main characters in bed in every chaper, very graphic! Wish I had not book both books as set....not really interested in reading the next one!
I have just read her second book after tis and oh boy what a read both these books are. I bought the second book before I finished the first so I could go straight on to it. You won’t be sorry. Happy reading.
