The author tells you the mental changes you need to make to change the destructive habits in your life. He explains the neuroscience behind the process of creating new habits. It's a fascinating read and George Ripley has done a great amount of research on the matter. New behaviors to you, cause the neural pathways associated with that behavior to strengthen. Those neural pathways may be weak and frail to start with, but will increase in intensity, as you repeat that new habit. The less you do a behavior , the weaker those pathways become. That makes sense. Have you ever been on a really healthy diet or eating plan and you got in the "Habit" of eating "Healthy" But, later, for whatever reason, you changed your eating habits and no longer had a "Taste" for that "Healthy" food. Maybe some of that weight came back on. It doesn't have to be dieting, it can be exercise or any habit, good or bad. Once the pathways are changed, they're either lessened or increased. The author explains all this. The choice is ultimately yours, whether that habit is going to be a negative, destructive habit or a positive, healthy one.
You'll learn the importance of "Self Awareness" and I like that the author has included a template for you to create your own little journal or you can purchase a small one. Write down your emotions and discover when, where and why certain behaviors are happening. You also might discover what's triggering those responses.
This author hits on a lot of excellent points and I'll probably go back later to reread his book. He strikes on the importance of meditation. While I try to meditate every day, I'll admit I don't always do it. If I did, I would be better for it. He also teaches you how Powerful Positive Thinking is. I have a friend that ALWAYS sees everything positive. No matter what it is, she'll find something positive in it. We're always joking about how positive she is, but the truth is, she's a joy to be around. No matter how you're feeling, she lifts you up. Positive thinking doesn't just affect you, it's infectious, It affects people around you. Everyone would rather be around a Positive Person, than a Downer.
I highly recommend this book. In the plethora of Self-Help Books, this one does stands out. It provokes one to stop and contemplate what the author is actually saying and you want to start implementing these changes into your life. I was gifted this book. Thank you for reading my review.

Positive thinking Eliminate negative thinking and become optimistic Achieve happiness success by improving your mindset and building confidence Tips Happiness Health Quotes edition by George Ripley SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
UK author George Ripley may just be beginning his career in writing but if this new book is an indication of how he will be approaching the written word (and more importantly his reading audience), then he is off to a sure start. The photographs that accompany his page show a healthy hunk with a vibrant and very happy face, a look that inspires confidence in the reader of a book on HAPPINESS and his second book on POSITIVE THINKING! George is working on his degree in Psychology – his decision to study psychology developed from a ‘curiosity to know why people are the way they are and what made the difference in the way people live their lives. Why are some people naturally happy and optimistic, confident and social? Why are some people quick to anger or desperately driven to achieve success?’
In his upbeat Introduction he directs our attention to his concept ‘It is not our circumstances that determine our emotions. It is not our circumstances that determine the actions we take. No, it is our attitude towards our circumstances and how we are perceiving things in our life that determine our actions and our emotions. Being able to think positively can be the difference between taking action towards our goals and procrastinating. It can be the difference between being happy and being unhappy, having great relationships or having bad relationships. Of course everybody understands the importance of having a positive attitude and an optimistic outlook on life. The problem is that the phrase 'positive thinking' is beginning to have negative connotations; people hear this phrase and think it is a load of wishy-washy feel good nonsense. The fact that you are reading this book suggests that you are not one of these people, but just in case, let's clear this up now. Positive thinking is not just using affirmations and hoping for things to happen like many people think. When I refer to 'positive thinking' in this book, I am referring to a particular state of mind. I am referring to having a resilience to life's troubles and an optimistic attitude that gets you to feel good more of the time, to focus on what you can control and to get things done that help you to achieve your dreams. This may sound too good to be true or perhaps a little cheesy, but just ask yourself these questions to help understand what life might be like with a strong positive attitude How great would your life be if every time you felt upset, you instead felt happy? How much closer to your goals would you be if every time you went to procrastinate, you instead felt motivated and driven? How much more fulfilling would your relationships be if every time you felt angry, you instead felt appreciative of those around you?'
George delves further into each of the topics he mentions in the Intro – The power of habit, Strategies for implementing positive thinking, Long term ways of sustaining positive thinking (meditation, eliminate negative influences, feed your mind, morning and evening ritual, regular exercise and proper nutrition) etc., and rich in excellent quotations from some of our greater minds. George may still be in his studies in psychology but he is generous in sharing all the aspects of living a more fulfilling life as he prepares for what is bound to be a very successful career. Grady Harp, December 16
You are what you think. Too many people are bogged down in the swamp of negative thinking, and never seem to be able to see the positive side of life. With effort and practice, you can learn to refocus your thoughts and develop the habit of positive thinking.
Positive Thinking by George Ripley is a short book of tips to rid yourself of pessimism and get on the road to a more positive, fulfilling life. While I found many helpful hints in this book, the number of typos and grammatical errors (that could be eliminated with a better job of editing and proofreading) detract a bit from its overall value. It would also be helpful to know a bit more about the author’s credentials as an aid in assessing the validity of his claims. The quotes supporting his thesis were helpful.
I’m a pretty negative thinker, and I don’t necessarily like admitting that. I don’t really like this about myself, and I know I cause unnecessary stress by thinking negatively. The introduction was simple and gives the reader a great peek at what this book is about, and how to use the book in your own life. This grabbed me pretty quickly, and I ended up reading it in one sitting. But as Mr. Ripley states in Chapter 1, this book isn’t meant to be read and put aside, forgotten. It’s meant to help create habits of positive thinking, and be reflected on often. It’s less than 100 pages long, so it was easy to read it cover to cover, and easy enough to reference back on every so often to help lock in the habits. At least for the next couple of months, which is about how long Ripley says habits are formed. I enjoyed this book, and will be using this book as a tool in the future. 5/5.
